Writer's picture: Nelson HusebyNelson Huseby

I love it when some of my family and friends bring something to my attention. In this case, my cousin, Eldon, read an article about a recent runestone discovered in Norway. Runestones were an ancient form of writing used by German and Viking peoples. The surviving ones were often carved in bedrock and boulders memorializing the dead. They were often colorful, but most of the colors wore off. Runestones are quite common from the 4th to 12th centuries, but what made this find so spectacular is that carbon dating indicates that these writings were from the early first century. These are the oldest discovery of runestones.
