No matter what your political persuasion might be, Walter Mondale was just another example of what Norwegian Americans have been able to achieve in the United States. Walter Mondale passed away on April 19, 2021, after serving our nation in various capacities for 62 years. His career actually began much sooner than that, when at the age of 20, he worked to get Hubert Humphrey elected to the US Senate in 1948. Humphrey was also a Norwegian-American on his maternal side. Mondale was put in charge of the 2nd District, which was heavily Republican, and included my family's hometowns of Nerstrand and Dennison, and Humphrey won the District. Mondale's political career started when he was appointed Attorney-General of the State of Minnesota in 1960. When Humphrey was elected Vice President of the United States, Mondale became his replacement in the US Senate, appointed by Governor Karl Rolvaag, another fellow Norwegian American. To say that Norwegian Americans became active in Minnesota politics would be an understatement. He represented the State of Minnesota until 1976 when he became the 42nd Vice President of the United States under Jimmy Carter.
