This story begins in France, like several other of the Cook-Maine family’s ancestors. Nicholas Gaylord was from the House of Gaillard, according to family tradition. The now-ruined Chateau Gaillard is on a cliff overlooking the River Seine in Les Andelys in Normandy in northern France. This town is halfway between Paris and Le Havre on the English Channel.
